Selling Stars is the first track of the unreleased acoustic extended play Mind Memories, that was created by Melanie Martinez during 2010 and 2011.
Theme
While talking about the EP on a 2015 interview, Melanie said that Selling Stars was about bullyng and self confidence and not being influenced by the other's bad comments.
Lyrics
Even the moon is pale
Even theyr comets are bigger
Oh, I would never, I would never
I would never sell my stars...
Everyday I dream about our future
How things will go
How things have been gone
Oh, it's so fast
Time doesn't pardon us
But even the meteor is coming
Even Jupiter is bigger
Even Saturn has rings
Even your space ship is in somewhere
I would never, never, never...
I would never sell my starsBackground
The song was about to be on Mind Memories EP, that was discarded some time before the release date. Melanie uploaded all music videos (including Selling Stars) on her YouTube channel, but she removed everything when the EP got scrapped. Some years later of the cancellment of Mind Memories, in 2016, a fan uploaded Selling Stars and Rain Boots music videos on theyr channel. In 2017, it was confirmed that Melanie only put Mind Memories music videos on "unlisted mode", and the person had just found out the links and reposted.
