"Purgatory" is the third studio album and third major-label record by Melanie Martinez. It was released on October 23rd, 2020 by Atlantic Records through digital download, CD, cassette and vinyl. The album debuted at #2 on the Billboard 200 albums chart with 90,000 total copies sold in its first week.

Background[]

Melanie had begun recording her third studio album right after her sophomore album, K-12, was released. She had recorded over 30 songs for the album, but only 13 made it onto the final cut. The album and lead single music video were finished in mid 2020.

On August 10th, 2020, Melanie posted a short teaser announcing a new single and the release date. Every day leading up to the release, a short teaser would be released. The first single, Bloody Mary, was released on August 14th, 2020 along with the music video. The song and video were released on the fifth anniversary of Melanie's debut album, Cry Baby.

In late August, Melanie announced that a new song would be released soon.

On September 16th, 2020, Melanie released Dear Porcupine, the first promotional single for the album. The song samples Melanie's older song by the same name.

On October 5th, 2020, Melanie announced a new song through a short teaser that was posted on her Instagram and Twitter. On October 9th, 2020, Melanie released the second single, Rolling Rink.

The album was released on October 23rd. Cassettes, vinyls, and physical copies were released, advertised as being in green, red, and pink. There is also a less common black cassette. All physical copies of the album are the standard explicit, with the deluxe and clean being digital exclusives.

  • Hey Alice, Dear Porcupine, Million Men, and Birthing Addicts are all inspired from songs originally written for Melanie's unreleased acoustic EP.
  • Little Red samples the instrumental of Where Do Babies Come From?, which was a track originally made for the deluxe edition of Cry Baby.
  • Melanie has stated that Bloody Mary is her favorite song from the album.
  • Birthing Addicts is the longest song in this album, both on the deluxe and standard version, with the song length at 5 minutes and 43 seconds. Ugly Duckling is the shortest song on the standard version of the album, lasting for 3 minutes and 18 seconds. Vintage is overall the shortest song in the deluxe version of the album, at 3 minutes and 1 second long.
