"Everafter" is the third studio album of Melanie Martinez. Martinez began writing and recording songs for it and her fourth extended play, After School, simultaneously. She began to divert her full attention just for the album by the EP's release. The album had 12 tracks, and was released on February 22nd, 2022.

Background and Promotion[]

Martinez had planned out a film that comes along with the album. The filming was started late-2020, however it was postponed due to the CoVID-19 pandemic, and unfortunately was discontinued for good. She said in an interview that she didn’t want to risk all of the actors and producers involved to CoVID-19, despite having a vaccine and everything. This majorly affected the actual album’s tracklist and was ultimately cut down from 16 to 12 tracks. She began writing songs for the album whilst recording songs for K-12, but most of the songs that are in the album now weren't recorded up until after the release of her fourth extended play, After School. Throughout 2021, she’d send hints and the status of her work-on-progress album.

On February 22nd 2021, she posted a picture of herself with some ivory-colored butterflies on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, with a caption saying “Finally, here arrives the sunrise, the dark’s gone as time flies, never happy or cheery, a year later, save the date for me.” The former part of the caption samples lyrics from the fourth track of her album, Avalon. Turns out that February 22nd of next year was the album’s release date.

On March 27th, 2021, she posted two photos of herself, this time exclusively to Instagram. It was a photo of her holding a crowbar, and the second one just her in a white dress. These seemed to be song references which are now both known as Velvet Crowbar and Ultraviolence. A week later, April 3rd, she posted two extended snippets covering both Velvet Crowbar and Ultraviolence by Lana Del Rey on Facebook.

On April 17th 2021, she further hyped up her album by posting a snippet of her title track Everafter on Twitter. With the caption being the snippet’s lyrics. She confirmed in an interview a few days later that that wasn’t even the snippet she meant to send out to Twitter, however she went for it as it was a song that is for sure going to be included in the album.

On May 23rd, 2021, she answered a question on Twitter about the film, and she revealed that the planned film was ultimately discontinued due to the CoVID-19 pandemic. A week later, May 30th, she posted another extended snippet of another song, now confirmed to be Wild Goose Chase, exclusively on Twitter.

On August 21st, 2021, she posts another extended snippet, now known as Treadmill, on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. It had a caption saying, “Track 9. <3”

On September 16th, 2021, she posts five pictures of her with a polaroid and photographs, with the background getting darker and the last one having blood included. The song she was referencing is now known as Final Photographs Pt. II.

On October 19th, 2021, she posted her final extended snippet, exclusively on Instagram. The song, now known as Thorn, is said by Martinez to be the second shortest track of the album, with the shortest one being an introduction track.

Arriving November 7th, she reveals that the album has 12 tracks, and it was supposed to have 11, but she had to add an introduction track. She answers a question on her Instagram story the next day, asking what track did she have a hard time composing, she blatantly says, “Track 4.”

On January 18th, 2022, she revealed the album’s name, Everafter, its tracklist, and its release date, being February 22nd on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. The next day, she releases a cinematic album teaser, featuring the introduction piece that she produced, Black Canvas, on YouTube. She further revealed that she used all of the footage they got from the discontinued film for the teaser.

Finally, February 22nd, 2022, arrives, and the album is released on all media-platforming services. She even released lyric videos for all of the tracks on YouTube.

In an interview on March 1st, 2022, she teased that it will have a deluxe version and it will have 7 exclusive tracks, and it will be coming very soon. Two weeks later, March 15th, 2022, she posted two extended snippets of two songs in the Deluxe version which are now known as Depths of Blue and Heart Flag, exclusively on Facebook.

On March 21st, 2022, she shared an extended snippet of a song, now known as Eclipse on both Twitter and Instagram. All the snippets that she shared for both the standard and deluxe albums were taken down on March 30th, 2022.

On April 1st, 2022, she hyped her deluxe album up and said that it will be released the very next week on April 8th. As expected by numerous fans it was nothing more than a cruel April Fools joke.

On April 16th, 2022, a day and a week after her little prank, she shared the deluxe tracklist on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, but it only had 6 new tracks, and not 7 as she said in the interview in March. Turns out she had to cut the song as it didn’t really fit the overall theme of the album, nor did it fit as one of the transitions towards the next one, confirming that it may not even be released despite it being one of the favorite songs she recorded overall. The song turns out to be one of the extended snippets she posted on March 15th, and was Heart Flag. She further revealed that it will be released very soon, “Maybe about a week or two?” she tweeted on Twitter a few hours after the tracklist reveal.

She kept her word as on April 30th, 2022, the deluxe version of the album was released on all media-platforming services, and she released lyric videos for all of them just like what she did for the standard album.

Theme[]

The album was overall much more bittersweet and melancholy. Talking about themes like grief over a loved one, desperation of love from them, blood and gore, rags to riches, etc. All ended off with a sultry cover of Velvet Crowbar.
