"Chalkboard" is the third song by Melanie Martinez on her fourth studio album, Gummies.
Theme[]
This song is about how Sophia is grappling with the whole Dad-tried-to-poison-me situation. Spoiler alert: she's not grappling very well. She was so traumatized by the incident that she refuses to eat any candy, which she used to love. Her mother, Cry Baby, also appears to be plotting something.
Lyrics[]
There's a lot of things she told me she wishes she was, oh-oh
She wishes she was stronger, stronger, braver
She wishes she could be somebody's saviour
Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh, mmh
She wishes that she was shorter, oh-oh-oh, mmh
But probably most importantly
She wishes her handwriting wasn't back, backward and forward
She wishes she could write like the teacher on the chalkboard, chalkboard
But who knows what that teacher is going through, oh-oh
Maybe her father tried, tried to
Tried to poison her too, oh-oh-ohhh
You shouldn't hurt people, they might be hurt already
Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh, mmh
As I watch as my poor daughter throws away the candy I bought her
Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh, mmh
But sti-i-i-i-i-i-i-ill
She wishes her handwriting wasn't back, backward and forward
She also wishes she could forget some memories
Memories of tragedies and horrors
She wishes she could write like the teacher on the chalkboard, chalkboard
There's a lot of things she told me she wishes she was, oh-oh
She wishes she was stronger, stronger, braver...
But probably most importantly
She wishes her handwriting wasn't back, backward and forward
She also wishes she could forget some memories
Memories of tragedies and horrors
She wishes she could write like the teacher on the chalkboard, chalkboard
Mommy's writing something on the chalkboard, oh-oh
Mommy's writing something on the chalkboard, oh-oh, mmh
