"Blunderland", stylized as "BlunderLand", is the third studio album by Melanie Martinez. It was released on March 16th, 2022 by Gruinard Records through digital download, CD, cassette and vinyl. Songs featuring Tierra Whack and Nicole Dollanganger were also featured on the album, both on the standard and deluxe versions.

Background and Promotion

Melanie started working on the album concept in mid 2019 until 2021, after the last days in K-12 Euro Tour, and being implied that some demos were already recorded in that period of time. It is unknown how many songs were destinated for the album, but some of they were posteriorly scrapped for unknown reasons.

On April 19th, 2020 a video named "doc.EdenHamsterMel//" was accidentally uploaded on her official channel, being deleted in a matter of 30 seconds. The video showed a muffled song which gradually evolved into a melody in Melanie's voice, showing her on studio. Fans theorized that it was a snippet of a new song, which they called "Eden Hamster". The full song remains lost, and not appeared on Blunderland's final version.

The album was originally to be released on April 3th, 2020, in the format of an extended play (EP); however, the date and the format were scrapped, changed and pushed back to early 2021-2022 years. On June 7th, 2020, Melanie had confirmed on her Instagram that new projects were coming out in addition to After School, and that half of the featured tracks were already finished.

On August 16th, 2020, Melanie posted a photo on her Instagram with the captions "Lest we forget, Atlantic. 🌹", indicating her farewell to Atlantic Records. Photos of her with Gruinard Record staff were been posted on her social media between late October, 2020.

On October 21th, 2020 Melanie Martinez posted several stories on her Instagram while was in the studio with Leonie Geralt and in one of these stories, a snippet of "Sleeping Beauty" could be heard.

On February 5th, 2021, Melanie claimed on her Instagram that something would come out between mid February & June, most likely indirectly confirming that the album's songs were probably done and the film was being produced. Melanie first teased a possible single track on February 16th, 2021 (which referred to "Bon Voyage" and "Grave Avenue"), posting emojis on a tweet with the caption "The mid beginning. YAAAAS! ✈️💔/⚰️👻". A few days later, the tweet was deleted.

In an interview with Alternative Press, on March 10th, 2021, Melanie confirmed that the album was already complete, and she was working on the album's feature film, also confirming that 2 of the 13 songs on the album would have collabs with two female artists. On June 17th, 2021, Melanie posted a tweet revealing a track that would be featured on the standard version as emojis. The tweet included "💎🎀" (which referred to "Gold & Ribbons").

In mid-August 2021, a TV spot teaser for the film was released, revealing that the title of the film was "BlunderLand". The teaser also revealed a snippet of "Venus Flytrap" and the presence of Nicole Dollanganger, making fans discover that she most likely would be one of the featured artists. Tierra Whack was revealed to be one of the featured artists through a photo Melanie posted on her Instagram on August 23rd, 2021.

On September 12th, 2021, the film's official trailer was released, and the album became available for pre-order on Melanie's official website, which revealed the tracklist for the Standard edition. Martinez changed her profile picture on Instagram, Twitter and the layout of her website, maybe indicating the aesthetic for the album's era. She also changed her Instagram bio to "At least my kind of bitch. ♡ CRYBABY♡".

During mid-September 2021, an exclusive merchandise was released to promote the album, which included original hoodies, t-shirts, chokers, bonnets, exclusive posters, etc. The CD's, vinyl packs and cassettes were released as part of the merchandise after the album's release.

To promote BlunderLand (the album and film), Melanie did a few things:

TBA and TBA were released as official promotional singles on January 9th, 2022, being double-featured on YouTube and iTunes. The BlunderLand Tour was posteriorly announced on January 21th, 2022, and the second leg for the Tour was confirmed in January 26th, 2022. Snippets of TBA and TBA were posted on February 18th, 2022, alongside the confirmation of the album's cover, on Martinez's Instagram and Twitter.

In an interview with Alternative Press on February 24th, 2022, Melanie confirmed that both the film and album were done. She declared that unlike her other works, the style of her songs would change and she would move to a more alternative/indie and rock-ish side in BlunderLand, also revealing that she was helping Michael Keenan with the tracks production. She also confirmed a Deluxe extension for the album.

On BlunderLand's release date, the album's CD was packaged along a storybook, with jewel case CD's available later. Both the picture disk and a standard black vinyl were also released. Cassettes were then released, advertised as being in mint green, white, and bubblegum pink. There is also a less common lilac cassette.

The story will take place in "BlunderLand". Melanie revealed that Cry Baby will be growing up and suddenly encountering problems that she herself had previously experienced in other people, which makes her feel empathetic about these cases and try to help these ones.

New characters will be introduced at Cry Baby's perspective at some point, and unlike Melanie's previous works, their background past wil be deeply revealed and what induces them to have certain attitudes.

The main story take place after the early finale of K-12 (The Film). Cry Baby decides to leave Lilith and her friends, losing control and feeling that something was missing, and that would be a big mistake to leave without discovering that.

After getting lost on the way home, Cry Baby ends up taking shelter in a hotel, near her path. She end up meeting Mr. Pashophorus, the hotel manager. After a strange reception and deciding to spend a night at there, Cry Baby wake up at the night discovering that she was being molested by Mr. Pashophorus. Trying to escape from there, but failing, a mysterious curse is thrown at her and she is transported to a parallel dimension called "BlunderLand".
