"BFF Necklace" is the fourth track by Melanie Martinez featured on her second studio album, Fairytale Dreams. It is also available as a single.
Theme[]
This song is about a girl who is great friends with Sophia, but then when she's about to move away, they buy BFF necklaces (the ones where each necklace has half of a heart) so that they remember each other. When her friend comes back in high school, she's smoking, doing drugs, and bullying Sophia. Upset, Sophia burns the BFF necklace.
Lyrics[]
Italics= DFG
Bold= Both
I met you on a cool autumn day
In first grade
Indeed, we did keep in touch
For this whole charade
A new girl wandered into my house
On a cool day
Did I really think that this friendship
Was here to stay?
Was I fucking insane?
Was I fucking insane?
We were as close as the thin little cracks
In a BFF necklace
We'd spend all our time together
Memories that last forever
But our childhood fun would fade
What do you reckon, things change
She was in fifth grade when she came home crying
"She's moving away"
Needed something to pay our farewells
On that winter's day
I took her to the jewelry store
On that rather sad day
And bought something because we thought
She'd stay the same
Were we fucking insane?
Were we fucking insane?
She gave me the idea to buy
A BFF Necklace
So even when they weren't together
The memories would last forever
But the childhood fun would fade
What do you reckon, things change
You came back in ninth grade, making yourself very ill
Smoking cigarettes and popping pills
And you stabbed me in the back
Why did you do that (bitch)
I'm burning it to the ground
The BFF necklace
Thought that we were still together
Guess friendship doesn't last forever
And the childhood fun did fade
What do you reckon, things change
Music Video[]
The music video is in a double feature with Evil Queen. It introduces a new character, Lucy Hopperton. Sophia becomes friends with Lucy at school and their friendship strengthens. Then Sophia receives the news that Lucy is moving away and goes to the jewelry store to buy BFF necklaces. There's a huge time skip, and then Lucy is leading her unhealthy lifestyle and bullying Sophia, so she burns the necklace in front of her former best friend's eyes.
Trivia[]
- In the clean version, the swear word is replaced with "going", but the word "bitch" wasn't filtered out, making the song still explicit in some people's eyes.
